Mirpur, Mar 5:
The excitement of being in the Asia Cup final might be palpable in the Bangladesh camp but for India, tomorrow’s summit clash would be just another game in the tournament, says Team Director Ravi Shastri.
“They (Indian players) are experienced players and they should treat this as another gamer. Our approach to every team and every game has been the same,” Shastri said during the shortest press conference conducted by the Indian team on this tour that lasted less than five minutes.
“Right from the start, we have approached every game as a knock-out game. The final will be no different for us,” he added. (PTI)

MIRPUR, Mar 5:
Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza today conceded that India are the clear favourites to lift the Asia Cup T20 cricket trophy and only the familiarity with home conditions could tilt the balance in his side’s favour in the summit clash here tomorrow.
India have been in rampaging form with four convincing wins in the tournament, including the 45-run thumping of Bangladesh in their opening league match, and Mortaza made it clear that “there was no debate” on who are the favourites in tomorrow’s final at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.
“We all know that Indians are clear favourites in the final. Let there be no debates or discussions on that,” Mashrafe said at a packed match-eve press conference. (PTI)

Chance for fringe players to impress selectors

MUMBAI, Mar 5:
The domestic season-ending five-day Irani Cup game between newly crowned Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai and the Rest of India, commencing here tomorrow, will provide fringe players a good opportunity to stake claims for the national team.
The first class match is the last occasion for hopefuls from both ranks to impress the five-member national selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil before attention shifts totally to the T20 format, commencing with the ICC World T20 Championships.
With the country expected to play over 15 Test matches post Indian Premier League till the end of next season, this match is the ideal platform for these players to strengthen their claims for the long Test haul.
Mumbai, who clinched the Ranji crown for the 41st time last week by defeating Saurashtra by an innings, have a settled combination led by wicket keeper batsman Aditya Tare.
They appear to be better prepared than the motley bunch of Rest of India, being led by Madhya Pradesh stumper Naman Ojha.
However, they would take the Rest of India lightly at their own peril as the latter have a good bowling attack at their command even without originally named Barinder Sran and Nathu Singh who have been injured and replaced by Ankit Rajpoot and Anureet Singh, according to their coach Ashish Kapoor.
The team has Andhra’s K S Bharat, who can open the innings, as the second keeper and Vidarbha’s Faiz Fazal as his likely opening partner.
The batting appears a bit weak and would be dependent mainly on the experienced trio of Ojha, Karnataka’s Karun Nair and Saurashtra’s Sheldon Jackson.
The spin attack looks thin with Jharkhand left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and Haryana off-spinner Jayant Yadav to man it though there is Akshay Wakhare in the squad as the other off spin option.
Rival squads (from):
Mumbai: Aditya Tare (Capt.), Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Akhil Herwadkar, Siddhesh Lad, Sufiyan Shaikh, Nikhil Patil (Jr.), Iqbal Abdullah, Shardul Thakur, Balwinder Singh Sandhu (Jr.), Badre Alam, Bhavin Thakkar, Vishal Dabholkar, Jay Bista.
Rest of India: K S Bharat, Faiz Fazal, Karun Nair, Sheldon Jackson, Naman Ojha (Capt.), Stuart Binny, Shahbaz Nadeem, Jayant Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Krishna Das, Sudeep Chatterjee, Ian Dev Singh, Akshay Wakhare, Ankit Rajpoot, Anureet Singh. (PTI)

Confident India ready for Bangladesh challenge in final

MIRPUR, Mar 5:
Unstoppable so far with clinical performances, a formidable India will square off against a passionate and sprightly Bangladesh in their quest for continental supremacy in the final of the Asia Cup Twenty20 cricket tournament, here tomorrow.
On paper, India are overwhelming favourites as the ICC rankings (India’s 1st vs Bangladesh’s 10th) suggests. But it counts for little in the shortest format, wherein the complexion of the game can change in a matter of one over.
A master plot always has sub-plots and this final will be no different. There will be little testing battles, which promise to make it an intriguing summit clash.
Whether it is Tamim Iqbal’s flamboyance against Jasprit Bumrah’s surprise element or young Soumya Sarkar’s cavalier approach against Ashish Nehra’s years of experience, there are enough ingredients for a heady battle.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s guile against Sabbir Rahaman’s conventional yet dangerously attacking batsmanship or Rohit Sharma’s artistry against Taskin Ahmed’s youthful exuberance can also be a spectator’s delight.
The only missing link will be Mustafizur Rahman, out with a Grade I side strain.
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be looking at a bigger picture as the Asian title will mark the perfect preparation before the ICC World T20 at home.
His opposite number Mashrafe Mortaza is not at all looking that far ahead as an Asian title will mean a watershed moment for T20 cricket in the country and a solid boost before they face the Netherlands and Ireland in the qualifying round of the marquee event in picturesque Dharamsala.
It will be a battle between a team full of T20 specialists against a team which has learnt to consistently punch above its weight.
And with the most partisan 25,000 supporters creating an awful din, it will not be an easy job for Dhoni and his men when Mortaza’s boys try to put them under the pump in a floodlit Sher-e-Bangla stadium.
For Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli — playing a big final is not new. They have been there and done that before.
For Mashrafe, Shakib Al Hasan, Sabbir Rahman, the taste of a title win is something alien. They came very near to it in 2012 when Pakistan crossed the final hurdle as Mahmudullah Riyadh choked in the final overs.
The same Mahmudullah is a ‘man of big occasions’ for Bangladesh as he has more than redeemed himself with that boundary off Anwar Ali to take his team to the final.
Teams:
India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah, Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Pawan Negi, Bhuvnesh-war Kumar.
Bangladesh: Mashrafe Mortaza (Captain), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahaman, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib-Al Hasan, Mahmudullah Riyadh, Mohammed Mithun, Arafat Sunny, Taskin Ahmed, Al-Amin Hossain, Nasir Hossain, Abu Hider, Nurul Hasan, Imrul Kayes.
Match starts 7pm (IST). (PTI)

Paris, Mar 6:

Novak Djokovic suffered his first Davis Cup defeat in five years as Serbia slipped 2-1 down to Kazakhstan while Andy and Jamie Murray gave defending champions Great Britain a 2-1 lead over Japan.
World number one Djokovic and 39-year-old Nenad Zimonjic lost their doubles rubber yesterday to Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov in Belgrade in the first round tie.
The 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 scoreline gave Kazakhstan a 2-1 lead ahead of the reverse singles on Sunday where the winner will go on to face either Britain or Japan in July’s quarter-finals.
Today, Djokovic will play Mikhail Kukushkin when he will try to keep the tie alive for the 2010 champions. The final singles is due to feature Viktor Troicki against Nedovyesov.
“Kazakhstan’s quality was extraordinary today. They were better in crucial moments,” admitted Djokovic.
“But we know what we have to do, we know how to prepare for the thrid day. We have reason to believe in both victories since we are the favourites — both Viktor and me.”
In Birmingham, the Murray brothers edged Britain closer to the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and Yakutaka Uchiyama.
Just as in their title triumph over Belgium in November in what was Britain’s first Davis Cup success in 79 years, the brothers played a starring role.
It was a fifth win in five Davis Cup outings for the Murrays who didn’t face a break point on Saturday.
The win gave the hosts a 2-1 lead and world number two Andy Murray can seal the tie on Sunday when he faces Japan’s top player Kei Nishikori, ranked number six, in the first reverse singles.
Dan Evans is scheduled to face Nishioka in what may be the decider.
Nishikori is the highest-ranked player Murray has ever played in Davis Cup, but he has won five of their previous six matches.
“I played well against him last year. I played him a couple of times. He’s ranked six in the world, so he’s one of the best,” said Murray.
“It’s obviously going to be extremely tough, but I’m playing well and hopefully I can play a good one tomorrow and try and seal the win.”
Bob and Mike Bryan gave the United States a crucial 2-1 edge with a thrilling five-set win over the Lleyton Hewitt-inspired Australians in Melbourne.
The 16-time Grand Slam and Olympics doubles champions looked to be cruising to victory, breezing through the opening two sets before Hewitt and John Peers forced a fifth set. (PTI)

New Delhi, Mar 7:

Cricketing greats such as Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, Wasim Akram and Inzamam ul Haq today picked India as the overwhelming favourites to win the World T20 title at home.
“Final is far away but India have a very good chance with the way they have played of late (including Asia Cup). Things were looking a lot different not so long ago (when the team lost to Bangladesh and South Africa in ODIs). What they have done in the last 8-9 matches, if they show the same intensity India have a very good chance. India are going into the tournament in very good form,” said Ganguly at the Aaj Tak’s Salaam Cricket conclave here today.
Wasim Akram, sharing the dais with Ganguly, Kapil, Inzamam and Mohammad Azharuddin, too backed the hosts to win the title for the second time.
“India are the favourites and the other top contenders will be South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Pakistan will be unpredictable as usual. It is a new tournament and new game for Pakistan. They should forget what happened in Asia Cup and enjoy the tournament,” said Akram.(PTI)
