Marathon men Djokovic, Murray set-up Davis Cup blockbuster

Paris, Mar 7:

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray spent almost 10 hours on court between them as they steered Serbia and Great Britain into a blockbuster Davis Cup quarter-final showdown.
World number one Djokovic needed four hours and 57 minutes yesterday to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin 6-7 (6/8) 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 6-3 6-2 to pull Serbia level at 2-2 with Kazakhstan in Belgrade.
Viktor Troicki then beat world number 200 Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-2 6-3 6-4 to put 2010 champions Serbia into a July 15-17 quarter-final with defending champions Great Britain.
Djokovic hit 19 aces and 37 winners but committed 94 unforced errors in his epic win over Kukushkin.
“This was one of the most difficult matches in my career both physically and mentally,” said 28-year-old Djokovic, who again was feeling the effects of a shoulder twinge.
World number two Murray needed four hours 55 minutes in Birmingham to defeat Kei Nishikori 7-5 7-6 (8/6) 3-6 4-6, 6-3 in another epic duel as his side took an unbeatable 3-1 lead over Japan.
Murray had seemed set for a comfortable afternoon against sixth-ranked Nishikori by taking the first two sets against a player he had defeated five times in six previous encounters.
But Nishikori battled and was even a break to the good in the deciding set before Murray stormed back for victory.
“The crowd helped for sure. I was struggling a little at the end of the third and a little bit throughout the fourth,” said Murray, who had been looking at the prospect of losing from two sets up for the first time in 11 years.
“There were long rallies, he was pushing me quite far off the baseline. I was trying to keep the points short but in the fifth I had to grit my teeth, fight hard and I managed to get the win.”
Murray hit 10 aces and 40 winners but suffered 97 unforced errors in the gruelling encounter.
Murray, 28, who won his singles opener on Friday and teamed up with brother Jamie to claim Saturday’s doubles, was playing for the first time in five weeks after taking time off to be with wife Kim and baby daughter Sophia.
“Thank you for all the support today,” tweeted Nishikori. “Sorry we could not win. It was a big battle. We keep working to improve.”
In Melbourne, record 32-time winners United States up a 3-1 win over Australia but the result was overshadowed by a bitter row between fiery Aussie teammates Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios.
Tomic challenged the commitment of Kyrgios to the Davis Cup after his team-mate’s withdrawal from the Kooyong tie with illness and back trouble.
John Isner was too strong for Tomic, winning 6-4 6-4 5-7 7-6 (7/4) to deliver the Americans a quarter-final clash against Croatia.(Agencies)

Mumbai, Mar 8:

Newly crowned Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai did not enforce the follow-on after taking a huge lead of 297 runs over Rest of India on day three of the five-day Irani Cup contest at the Brabourne Stadium, here today.
The 41-time national champions bundled out the Rest for 306, that was mainly built around Karnataka batsman Karun Nair’s 94, in reply to their own mammoth first innings total of 603 to take the lead.
However, to give rest to their bowlers and fielders, Mumbai opted to bat instead of enforcing the follow-on and made 2 for 1 in their second innings at stumps.
In the morning, Rest began their first innings at the overnight 36 for one but lost the wicket of opener Faiz Fazal quite early and after the addition of only 19 runs.
A stand of 55 between night watchman Jayant Yadav (48) and Sudip Chatterjee (23) moved the score past the 100 mark before Mumbai struck hard by sending back both as well as captain Naman Ojha to leave Rest struggling at 128 for 5.
It was left to Nair, who batted for 275 minutes and struck 11 fours in his 192-ball knock, to revive the tottering innings with help from Sheldon Jackson (37) and tail-ender Jaydev Unadkat (48).
With Jackson, Nair added 59 runs for the sixth wicket and with Unadkat he put on 91 for the ninth wicket before he was last out when in the company of No 10 Krishna Das as injured Ankeet Rajput did not come out to bat.
The bulk of the wickets were taken by medium pacer Abhishek Nayar (3 for 35) and the two spinners – left arm Iqbal Abdullah (2 for 62) and off spinner Jay Bista (2 for 52).
Mumbai lost Akhil Herwadkar cheaply to off spin bowler Jayant Yadav off the fourth ball of their innings before stumps were drawn with first innings centurion Bista on 1.
Brief scores: Mumbai 603 and 2 for 1 (J Bista batting 1). Rest of India 306 all out (Jayant Yadav 46, Karun Nair 94, Sheldon Jackson 37, Jaydev Unadkat 48; Abhishek Nayar 3 for 35, Iqbal Abdullah 2 for 62, Jay Bista 2 for 52). (PTI)

New Delhi, Mar 8:

The much-anticipated World Twenty20 cricket match between India and Pakistan will be held as scheduled in Dharamsala, Tournament Director M V Sridhar said today.
“The match is on. The State and Central Governments are onboard and all security arrangements have been made,” he said after a meeting with Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Home Ministry M K Singla besides others here.
Pakistan will play against India on March 19 in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. There has been some opposition in the State, including from ex-servicemen, on holding the match at the hill station.
Sridhar, however, said discussions with Home Ministry officials remained inconclusive and a few issues are yet to be sorted out.
Sridhar, also General Manager of Cricket Operations of the BCCI, was accompanied by IPL anti-corruption and security unit head and former Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and a few other BCCI officials.
Representatives of Himachal Pradesh Government were also present in the meeting.
Singla said an official team of Pakistan had visited Dharamsala and has expressed satisfaction over the security arrangements in the stadium as well as hotels in the picturesque hill station.
Singla said Kangra District Magistrate and local Inspector General of Police assured full protection to players and the venue.
Besides the Dharamsala match, Pakistan will play two matches in Mohali, Punjab — against New Zealand on March 22 and Australia on March 25.
The Pakistani team will also play a match in Kolkata on March 16.
A team of Pakistani officials arrived in India yesterday to review security arrangements for their team during the tournament.
The semi-finals of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament will be held in New Delhi on March 30 and in Mumbai a day later.
The final will be played in Kolkata on April 3.

We’re in 6th gear but let’s not take things for granted: Dhoni

$

Kolkata, Mar 8:

The Indian cricket team is in “sixth gear” after a perfect buildup heading into the World Twenty20 Championship but captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Today said the side cannot afford to take things for granted given the format’s fickle nature.
India blanked Australia in their own backyard, beat Sri Lanka at home before capturing the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. In the course of these triumphs, Dhoni’s men lost just one game making it the near-perfect build-up campaign for the team which won the inaugural Championship back in 2007.
“I think we are running on sixth gear. Technology has gone into the eighth gear but the kind of stuff we are doing on the field is adequate for any level of game. We have to see the focus should be on from the very first ball. I think everything is set, there’re not anymore gears to operate on. I am really quite happy with the progress,” Dhoni said at the pre-tournament news conference where the main draw matches will start on March 15.
India will be up against New Zealand in their opening match in Nagpur on March 15.
“Let’s not say it’s happening in India so it belongs to us. Especially in the shorter formats, the difference becomes smaller and smaller. Every team has a chance, if we play to our potential and execute our plans then we definitely have a chance.”
Dhoni said it was a big relief for him to see that the young duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have managed to gel with the team along with comeback veteran Ashish Nehra.
“Definitely, I feel happy, it’s a big relief. It’s a relief to have death bowlers. 99 per cent of the time I know who’s bowling the death. The job becomes easy. The whole bowling department is doing well. I don’t have to put a lot of effort.”
On the preparation front, the buildup to India’s successful campaign in winning the 2011 World Cup may be different but expectations are the same, said World Cup winning Indian skipper.
“Frankly it’s the difficult to remember the 2011 World Cup. When it comes to expectations, I don’t think it’s any lesser than in 2011.
It’s difficult to remember the preparations we went through before the 2011 World Cup but as far as this preparation is concerned, we have had a perfect scenario.
“We won the Australia series, the bilateral series with Sri Lanka, than winning a tournament like Asia Cup, we are looking right on track. Fitness will be one of the concerns. Because of fitness you may lose one of the first XI. Unless it’s a ball hit injury or like that, we will be quite happy,” he said.
Quizzed about his batting position which he shuffles as per match situation, Dhoni said he would continue the finisher’s role of hitting it big in minimum deliveries. (PTI)

“I always felt good when it comes to batting. Up and down keeps happening in the batting department. You have to see the opportunity you’re getting. It depends how much opportunity. I felt I had a decent opportunity. 90 per cent of time I will be playing the same kind of role as I played in the Asia Cup, playing 10-12 ball innings. I’m ready for the challenges,” he said.
Dhoni said being a finisher, he has a complex part to play in the team. The wicketkeeper-batsman also lauded Virat Kohli for his ability to play the finisher’s role despite being top-order batsman.
“For me a finisher is a lower order batsman. The top order batsman is always sets up the innings but it’s always useful to have somebody like Virat at no 3 who has the ability to finish the game. But when the opposition scores big it is important for your 5-6-7 to finish the game. The entire set up is for the lower order batsman to finish the game.
“But I think the finishers will be the batsmen who usually bat lower down the order. The job profile is very different. You have to think twice before hitting lower down the order as you have less batsmen after you. It’s a complex job. If you have three batsmen of Virat’s calibre then more often than not they will finish,” he added.
Evaluating the challenge that awaits India, Dhoni said pinch-hitters will play a crucial role in the tournament.
“It’s difficult to measure the challenges. It’s a world class tournament. Every team is very good. Every team has a set of players who can play big shots. All teams have fantastic bowlers and good all-rounders. (PTI)

“It’s quite even, it’s not like you’re far away from each other. I feel at start everything will boil down to how well you play on the particular day. I don’t think you can take a side lightly, a big hitter can really change a game if he plays a big innings,” he said.
“When it comes to my role, I felt not everybody can be flexible according to needs. At times if you have a good partnership, and if you have the flexibility and adaptability the job becomes easier. This kind of adaptability is needed. We have played enough cricket to be open to the idea,” Dhoni added.
India will face West Indies in a warm-up match on March 10 to at the Eden Gardens here which will also host the summit clash April 3.
The Indian skipper, however, said they are not thinking too far but it’s about be in the top of the game in the knockouts.
“I feel it’s a long way off to think of the final. We will slowly go into warm-up games and take one game at a time. All sides are very good. The build up will depend on the way we start. I don’t think I will have to worry about the final. We will have to worry about the preparation and execution,” he said.
The wickets, Dhoni said, will suit the batsmen in the World Twenty20 keeping in mind of the spectators interest.
“Normally in a tournament like this you will get flatter wickets to have more entertaining games for spectators. The pattern in these tournaments is generally more in favour of the batsmen,” he said.
Speaking about the criticism he has been facing, Dhoni reiterated that had the team lost the Asia Cup, it would have been a bigger headline than their triumph on Sunday.
“I’m not here to give answers to anyone. As I said earlier, India losing the Asia Cup final is a bigger headline than winning it. People will keep talking about a lot of stuff.
“But it’s important to know the responsibility you have in the team. They will always criticise but from a player’s side it’s important to know what the team needs. You don’t always have to look good.” (PTI)

Sharapova confirms failed drug test, sanction uncertain

Los Angeles, Mar 8:

Five-time Grand Slam tennis champion Maria Sharapova has announced that she failed a dope test at the Australian Open, and isn’t sure what punishment she’ll face for her “huge mistake.”
The former world number one from Russia yesterday said a change in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list for 2016 led to an inadvertent violation, for which she will be “provisionally suspended” by the International Tennis Federation.
In a sign of what the affair could mean to Sharapova’s mass of money-spinning endorsements, US sportswear maker Nike said it would halt its relationship with her as the case moves forward.
“We are saddened and surprised by the news about Maria Sharapova,” Nike said in a statement.
“We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues.”
Sharapova tested positive for Meldonium, a drug she said she had been taking since 2006 but was only added to the banned list this year.
“I did fail the test and I take full responsibility for it,” a sombre Sharapova said at a press conference at a downtown Los Angeles hotel yesterday.
“I made a huge mistake. I let my fans down. I let my sport down that I’ve been playing since the age of four that I love so deeply,” added Sharapova, her voice wavering.
“I know that with this, I face consequences and I don’t want to end my career this way — and I really hope I will be given another chance to play this game.”
The ITF confirmed in a statement that Sharapova had tested positive on January 26 and had accepted the finding when she was notified on March 2.
“Ms Sharapova will be provisionally suspended with effect from 12 March, pending determination of the case,” the ITF said.
Sharapova said she was cooperating with the ITF and did not yet know the extent of the sanctions she would face.
Her attorney, John Haggerty, said the positive test could carry a ban of up to four years, but that mitigating circumstances could see a lesser penalty.
Shamil Tarpishchev, head of the Russian tennis federation, told the TASS news agency he believed Sharapova would still have a chance to play at the Rio Olympics in August.
Sharapova, 28, burst onto the international scene as she giggled and grunted her way to the Wimbledon crown in 2004.
She won the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008 and the French Open in 2012 and 2014.
Her ferocity on the court, business acumen and glamorous looks have all combined to make her a marketing juggernaut and the overseer of such successful ventures as her Sugarpova line of candy.
She has 35 WTA singles titles, more than USD 36 million in career earnings and is currently ranked seventh in the world.
“I am very saddened to hear this news about Maria,” WTA chief executive Steve Simon said in a statement.
“Maria is a leader and I have always known her to be a woman of great integrity. Nevertheless, as Maria acknowledged, it is every player’s responsibility to know what they put in their body and to know if it is permissible.” (Agencies)

At stumps on the fourth and penultimate day, the Rest, who conceded a huge first innings lead of 297, were 100 for the loss of opener K S Bharat’s (42) wicket to whittle down the lead to 380.

Earlier Mumbai, who did not enforce the follow on last evening and resumed today at their overnight second innings score of 2 for 1, were shot out for 182 in 51.2 overs — mainly by the efforts of spin-pace combine of Jayant Yadav (4 for 93) and Jaydev Unadkat (3 for 16).

Shami makes an impact in Team India practice

KOLKATA, Mar 9:
Clearing concern about his fitness, India pacer Mohammed Shami was in full flow today during the practice session of the Indian team on the eve of their World Twenty20 warmup fixture against the West Indies here tomorrow.
Shami bowled with a good rhythm to Indian star batsmen trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh and the latter even had some problems negotiating with the pace and movement.
The 25-year-old pacer was never in trouble and looked as if he continued from where he had left during his bowling spell spanning for more than half an hour.
Indian team director Ravi Shastri also made it clear that Shami will figure in the playing XI during the two warm-up games against West Indies and South Africa in Mumbai on March 10 and March 12 respectively in order to assess his fitness.
“He’s in the side and obviously he will play,” Shastri told reporters today as the pacer was seen paying rapt attention to India bowling coach Bharat Arun.
India’s front-line pacer less than a year back, Shami is struggling to regain his place in the team following his surgery on his troubled knee. He had failed in his brief attempt during the Australia tour earlier this year when he pulled a hamstring. (PTI)
But keeping in mind his ability, Shami was kept in the World Twenty20 squad with Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the standby and a final call will be taken ahead of their WT20 opener against New Zealand on March 15.
Bhuvneshwar too bowled in tandem with Shami, while Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina were seen batting against the spinners in their afternoon practice session.
If Shami is declared fit, it will be a problem of plenty for the Indian think-tank. But the pacer will still struggle to fit in the XI as his replacement Jasprit Bumrah and veteran Ashish Nehra have proved to be a winning combination for India. (PTI)
